OnlyFunds vs a Regular Financial Advisor: What's the Difference?

If you've started earning real money as a creator, you've probably asked this question: should I use an automated platform like OnlyFunds, or hire an actual financial advisor?

It's a legitimate question with a concrete answer.

What a Traditional Financial Advisor Actually Is

"Financial advisor" covers a wide range of people with different credentials, compensation models, and capabilities. The most important distinction:

Fee-only fiduciary advisors (RIAs). They charge you directly, either hourly, a flat annual fee, or a percentage of assets under management (AUM). Required by law to act in your best interest. This is the gold standard.

Commission-based advisors. They earn money when they sell you financial products. Can be helpful, but have built-in conflicts of interest.

Broker-dealers. They execute trades and may provide advice, but are only required to recommend "suitable" products, not necessarily the best ones for you.

For this comparison, we'll assume a fee-only fiduciary RIA. That's the fair comparison.

What a Traditional Financial Advisor Does

A comprehensive fee-only advisor provides:

  • Financial planning. Cash flow analysis, goal-setting, debt management, insurance review.

  • Tax strategy. Coordinating with your CPA on deductions, retirement contributions, timing of income.

  • Investment management. Building and managing a portfolio aligned to your goals.

  • Estate planning guidance. Coordinating with attorneys on wills, trusts, and beneficiaries.

  • Ongoing relationship. Quarterly check-ins, life event planning, proactive advice.

This is genuinely valuable. A good advisor pays for themselves many times over, catching tax mistakes, preventing behavioral investing errors, and optimizing retirement accounts.

What OnlyFunds Does

OnlyFunds is an automated investment platform built for content creators. It provides:

  • Portfolio construction using diversified ETFs based on your risk tolerance

  • Automatic rebalancing as markets move

  • Flexible contributions that accommodate both recurring deposits and lump-sum windfalls

  • Tax-aware investing built with creator tax obligations in mind

  • Low minimum, low cost: accessible without a large initial investment or high fees

What OnlyFunds does not provide: comprehensive financial planning, tax preparation, insurance advice, estate planning, or a human relationship.

The Cost Reality

Traditional advisor (fee-only):

  • AUM model: typically 0.5% to 1.5% of assets annually

  • Flat fee: $2,000 to $10,000 per year for comprehensive planning

  • Hourly: $200 to $400 per hour

At $100,000 invested, an AUM-based advisor charging 1% costs $1,000 per year. At $500,000, that's $5,000 per year.

OnlyFunds: A fraction of the cost of a traditional advisor, with no minimum AUM requirement.

The Access Reality

Most fee-only fiduciary advisors have minimum asset requirements, often $250,000 to $500,000 to get in the door. Some have moved to flat-fee models, but even at $3,000 per year, that's a real cost.

A creator in their first two years of significant income, earning $50,000 to $150,000 per year, still building their emergency fund, still figuring out quarterly taxes, often can't access the advisors who would serve them best.

OnlyFunds has no minimum. You can start with whatever you have.

The Creator-Specific Problem

Many traditional advisors aren't comfortable with creator income. Their planning software assumes W-2 income. Their onboarding questions don't account for platform revenue, brand deal timing, or OnlyFans as a business. Some advisors won't work with adult content creators at all.

Even a well-intentioned advisor has to translate your situation into their tools, and something gets lost in that translation.

OnlyFunds doesn't require translation.

When to Use OnlyFunds

OnlyFunds is the right choice when:

  • You're building your investment foundation and don't yet qualify for traditional advisory minimums

  • You want low-cost, automated investing without the overhead of an advisor relationship

  • Your financial situation is relatively straightforward

  • You've been priced out of traditional advisory services

  • You want a platform that understands creator income

When to Add a Traditional Advisor

Consider adding one when:

  • Your investable assets exceed $250,000 to $500,000

  • You're forming a business entity, hiring employees, or considering acquisition

  • You need comprehensive estate planning with trusts and multiple beneficiaries

  • You're planning a major tax event such as a large income year or property sale

  • You want proactive guidance beyond investment management

The two aren't mutually exclusive. Many creators use OnlyFunds for their core investment portfolio while working with a CPA or financial planner for broader strategy.

Starting vs. Waiting

For most creators, OnlyFunds and a traditional financial advisor aren't competing products. They're sequential ones. Start with OnlyFunds while you're building your financial base. Add a human advisor when your complexity warrants it.

Waiting until you can "afford" advice before starting to invest is the most expensive choice of all.
