Betterment vs OnlyFunds: Same Mechanics, Different World

Betterment is a good product. It pioneered tax-loss harvesting for retail investors. Its portfolio construction is solid. The interface is clean. For a certain type of investor—someone with a stable salary, predictable monthly cashflow, and a simple financial life—Betterment does exactly what it promises.

Content creators are not that investor.

This is not a knock on Betterment. It's an honest look at what happens when you take a tool built for one set of assumptions and hand it to someone whose financial life looks completely different.

What Both Platforms Do

Betterment and OnlyFunds are both robo-advisors. They build diversified portfolios based on your risk tolerance, rebalance automatically as markets move, use low-cost ETFs to minimize fees, and allow you to set deposit schedules and investment goals.

The underlying investment mechanics are largely the same. Both draw from Modern Portfolio Theory. If you put $10,000 into each platform with identical risk settings, the portfolios could look similar. (Though OnlyFunds tends to include a wider array of investments in its portfolios, including some actively managed funds).

So what's actually different?

The Assumptions Built Into Betterment

Betterment's onboarding asks for your annual income. Its goal-setting tools work backwards from a target number. Its deposit reminders are built around a monthly cadence. The entire experience assumes you know roughly how much you'll earn this month, you have a consistent amount available to invest each month, and your financial complexity is moderate.

These assumptions work for the majority of Betterment's users. They break immediately for creators.

When a brand deal hits, say $15,000 in a single payment, Betterment has no framework for it. It's not built for lump-sum optimization. It will suggest a recurring deposit schedule based on your stated annual income, which may look nothing like how your money actually arrives.

When a slow month hits, Betterment sends deposit reminders that feel out of touch. During a month when your AdSense dropped 60% and you're watching your emergency fund, those nudges land wrong.

What OnlyFunds Does Differently

OnlyFunds starts from a different assumption: your income is unpredictable, and that's fine.

The investment framework at OnlyFunds is built around creator income patterns—not to judge them or normalize them, but to work with them.

Lump-sum flexibility. Invest when money comes in, not on an arbitrary monthly schedule. A $20,000 brand deal goes to work immediately, allocated according to your risk profile and goals.

Tax-aware contribution sequencing. Creators have unique tax obligations: quarterly estimates, self-employment tax, business deductions. OnlyFunds is built with awareness of these variables, so your investment strategy doesn't accidentally drain the cash you owe the IRS in April.

No judgment on your profession. Betterment's onboarding has no category for "content creator" or "OnlyFans." OnlyFunds was built for this. There's no translation required.

Integrated referrals to OnlyFans-friendly tax planning. OnlyFunds focuses on building relationships with the ecosystem content creators already live in.

Where Betterment Still Wins

Track record. Betterment has been around since 2010 and manages over $40 billion. OnlyFunds is newer. If institutional scale matters to you, Betterment has that edge.

Feature depth. Tax-loss harvesting, joint accounts, trusts, 401(k) rollovers. Betterment has a longer feature list built over 15 years.

Name recognition. Your accountant has heard of Betterment. You may need one sentence to explain OnlyFunds.

The Real Question

Which platform was built for you?

Betterment was built for professionals with stable salaries, predictable cashflow, and financial lives that fit neatly into traditional planning frameworks. It works extremely well for that group.

OnlyFunds was built for creators whose income arrives in waves, whose revenue can swing dramatically month to month, and who have found that the mainstream financial world wasn't designed with them in mind.

The mechanics are similar. The experience is not.
